Physical education is the change of future healthy lifestyle habits. My passion lies within the realm of physical activity and its effect on the healthy growth of young students. Through the developmental approach, I believe that maturation of motor abilities occur in distinct phases, and that the total focus is on the growth of the whole child. Student learning takes place through motivation, successful experiences, role modeling, and providing a positive, clear, and caring environment. Within the humanistic model, I believe that physical education should center around the total well being of the student. The opportunity for each student to grow at their individual rate is essential in developing healthy lifestyle experiences. I am a dedicated individual who envisions improvement and excitement of physical fitness among all students. Cross curricular learning will be emphasized through other core academic areas and health and wellness topics in physical education. By utilizing various models of instruction, I aim to reach more students and develop analytical and physical skills. Though direct instruction, inquiry, peer teaching, and cooperative learning, children will learn to work in small groups and enhance social and problem solving skills. Classroom management will be set with clear expectations through consistent procedures and uniformed protocols. Students will be motivated through positive feedback, a clear set of expectations, interesting and exciting new activities and games, and most of all internal rewards. I believe in developing the three domains of learning, the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective areas. Students will improve physically, socially and emotionally, and develop strong problem solving skills through activity. Students will grow to learn that activities come in all sorts of varieties, and can be fun and worthwhile practices for life. Leadership, teamwork, and building of social values will always be implemented within my classes. The inclusion of all students with disabilities will be constantly reinforced. Children will learn in a positive, caring, warm, and nurturing environment not only the benefits of physical activity, but also proper nutritional aspects of healthy living. The food pyramid and activity pyramid will be reinforced and highlighted throughout the curriculum, enhancing the awareness of healthy eating habits coinciding with healthy physical activity. Assessment is key in reviewing student learning. I believe through checking for understanding, quizzes, alternative assessments, and the use of technology, student learning can be assessed and reported consistently. By providing a positive and caring environment in my classroom, student learning will take place, and the understanding of healthy lifestyles shall be improved.
